I was plesantly surprised to catch a world affairs segment on the BBC yesterday called 'Our World - Russia's New Model Army'. It provided an excellent insight into the changing face of the Russian military jugernaught as it struggles to modernize.

There are some very rare video clips of the Russian army training, as well as some quite frank interviews with some soldiers themselves on how things have improved over the past few years. Western journalists do not usually get this sort of access. In all, this is an very interesting documentary and much credit must go to Tim Whewell (reporter), Yury Ermolin (camera) and, of course, the BBC News for getting such a scoop.

This documentry can be seen on the BBC iPlayer: 'Our World - Russia'a New Model Army'

I didn't want to bog down my initial post on this program by adding my usual opinionated drivel - so here's my comments:-

I think raising the specter of a resurgent 'Red Army' is little sensationalist, but the British media have been much taken by the idea of some sort of new cold war of late. But if you dig into this program and listen carefully the real story is rather more positive...

As the program points out (all be it towards the end), a smaller professional Russian Army is a GOOD THING as it would be less concerned with maintaining outmoded ideas of a pissing contest with the West.

The Russian Army still has a long way to go - and I am not sure whether it really can achieve it's goal of an all professional army. This will only come with real democracy and economic and social stability.
