What is MTP camo *really*?

I have posted a few tidbits about the 'new' British Army camouflage called MTP (Multi Terrain Pattern) and have thus far fallen into the rather uninformed view that 'it's just Multicam'. Partly this isn't my fault, you see *from a distance* MTP does look very much like Multicam, and it's heavily influenced by Multican AND it's made by Crye, the manufacturer of Multicam - so I have a bit of an excuse to think MTP was actually Multicam.

My problem was that there has not been a very clear explaination of what MTP actually is *really*, and no difinitive comaprisons between it and Multicam.

I am glad to say that in his blog - The Camo Side of Dominic Hyde (excellent title!) - Dominic gives the first really clear explanation of the history and development of MTP and shows the first close-up swatch of the pattern I have seen. And surprise, surprise - MTP isn't really Multicam!

Though - in my defence (as I fell into the trap of calling MTP 'just Multicam) - Dominic does point out in his excellent article that MTP and Multicam are very similar:

"...at more than a few feet away it’s pretty hard to tell the difference between the two Crye designs anyhow)." Dominic Hyde

To cut to the chase - and simplify matters, MTP can be thought of the love child of DPM and Multicam - with Multicam colouration and a few legacy bits of DPM splodges thrown in for good measure.

Above: Left - Crye's MULTICAM and on the right MTP. Most notable difference seems to be the extension of the black 'blobs' which are morphing into a DPM type of mottled shape in the MTP. Other colour areas also seem to have this DPM type mottled fringe to them.
